Garbine Muguruza bounces back after losing the first set over Barbora Kreichikova
Anette Kontaveit extended her winning streak to 12 matches by beating Karolina Plishkova 6: 4 6: 0 to secure a spot in the WTA semi-finals.
The 25-year-old Estonian has won 28 of her last 30 matches, including the league title in Ostrava. Prior to that, she had a record of 19-13 per year.
“I really enjoy being on the court, just having a good time. I think this is the main reason why I am doing so well. I really feel like I can fight everyone, ”Kontaveit said on Friday.
Kontaveit, who has risen from the 30th place in the ranking to the top ten since she started working with Dmitry Tursunov at the Cincinnati Masters, took a place in the final four of the tournament.
“I think every win at the end of the year gave me more confidence,” Kontaveit said.
“I also got some good advice from my new coach. I think he brought new energy to the team. ”
In the last match on Friday, Garbine Muguruza got together to beat Barbora Kreichikova 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and continue the fight for the title.
To reach the semifinals for the second time in her career, the Spaniard (1: 1) needs a Sunday victory over Kontaveit (2: 0) and a victory over Plishkova (1: 1).
Quick first set
Second seeded Kreichikova interrupted Muguruza’s serve in the fifth and seventh games and took the first set in just 36 minutes. But Muguruza bounced back and broke Kreichikova in the fourth game, going ahead 3: 1, and added a break in the eighth.
Muguruza, who is the local favorite after winning titles in Monterrey in 2018 and 2019, took a break in game three of the third set and held on to victory.
