At least 45 people were killed in a bus crash in western Bulgaria early Tuesday morning, authorities said. The bus, registered in North Macedonia, crashed at around 2 a.m. and killed children, authorities said. Seven people were taken to hospitals for treatment.

The cause of the crash was not immediately revealed. Officials said an investigation would be launched.

Bulgarian news agency Novinite reported that representatives of the Macedonian embassy visited the hospital, where some of the victims were taken.

Interim Prime Minister Stefan Yanev visited the crash site and told reporters it was “a huge tragedy.”

“Taking this opportunity, I express my condolences to the families and friends of the victims,” said Yanev.

“Let’s hope we learn from this tragic incident and can prevent such incidents in the future.”
