Back in 2018, Matthew Wade admitted that his international career was almost over. It was against the backdrop of an indifferent summer in home cricket, when he lost his place in the tests to Tim Payne, and he was replaced by Alex Carey in cricket with a white ball.

“I had the opportunity to play a lot for Australia and I am grateful to have this opportunity. Hopefully now I just want to enjoy cricket for the next three, four, five years. When you drop all formats in the summer, I would be surprised if they come back to me, ”Wade told reporters at the time.

On Thursday, as he led Australia to the T20 World Cup final with Markus Stoinis, the wicket batsman went philosophical. An unsuccessful pursuit could make him a fallen guy again. But at 33, Wade sees things differently.

“I don’t feel like it’s on the line anymore because I’m no longer 23 years old. And if this is it, then this is it. This is not really for me. I guess it will be over, ”he said at a post-match press conference.

Of course he was nervous, Australia was swinging 96/5 in pursuit of a big target. The fact that this could be his last trip to Australia worried Wade. “A little, I think … I was a little nervous getting in the game and knowing that this could potentially be the last opportunity to represent Australia.”

An interesting part of Wade and Stoinis’ ongoing 81-race partnership was his tactical side, first slowing play when Pakistan was at the top and then full throttle. Three consecutive sixes from Wade from Shahin Shah Afridi ended the deal with Australia, and the last of them was a daring circle that crossed the border of the penalty leg.

Wade loves to throw punches, but it has also led to his defeats many times, especially in the BBL. He had previously talked about working extra time to correct deficiencies, but Wade never thought about avoiding it entirely.

The advantage of playing on the circle is that when the thin leg is lifted up, the batsman has a lot of space behind the goalkeeper on the side of the leg. And with someone like Afridi, they played fast bowling, and Wade could use the speed of the ball.

“But I was grateful that I had something left at the end. And it is very important for someone like me to open the ground for me, ”he said.
