Poor vision can be the result of habits and lifestyle, as well as pre-existing medical conditions. A combination of factors including genetics, age and your personal environment can affect your vision. While people can correct their vision simply by wearing glasses or contact lenses, they tend to ignore the other steps needed to take care of their vision. Since the world is surrounded by screens, it is easy to develop bad habits that can contribute to visual impairment. According to a WHO report, at least 2.2 billion people worldwide have visual impairments near or far. In at least 1 billion cases, or nearly half, visual impairments could be prevented or have yet to be addressed. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Tushar Grover, Medical Director of the Vision Eye Center in New Delhi, spoke about 5 daily habits that you need to get rid of in order to maintain healthy vision for the rest of your life: (Anna Shvets)

3. Do not wear sunglasses. You can expose your eyes to harmful UV rays if you don't wear sunglasses regularly when you go outside. These harmful rays can cause vision problems and also cause other vision problems such as macular degeneration and eye cancer! 4. Frequent eye rubbing. You need to avoid the temptation to rub your eyes, no matter how much you feel like it. The reason is that you can damage the outer surface of your eyes, causing a tingling and burning sensation, in addition to spreading dirt and bacteria in your eyes. Frequent rubbing of the eyes can also cause the cornea to weaken, which can lead to permanent visual impairment. If you feel the need to rub your skin, you can splash it with water or use a cold compress to soothe the irritation. (Karolina Grabowska)

Dr. Tushar Grover said: “In addition to these habits, avoiding eye-healthy foods in your diet, not drinking enough water, and not getting enough sleep can also lead to poor vision. Studies have also shown that old contact lenses should not be worn. Some people wear contact lenses all day and even sleep with them on at night, which can put you at risk for allergies, severe dry eyes, and serious eye-threatening corneal infections.” (Unsplash)
