Francis Haugen, former Facebook product manager, will appear before Senate hearings Tuesday to push for more Facebook regulation. The following is an excerpt from the opening statement of her affidavit.
My name is Francis Hogen. I used to work at Facebook and joined it because I believe that Facebook can bring out the best in us. But I’m here today because I believe Facebook products harm children, fuel rift, weaken our democracy, and more. The company’s management knows how to make Facebook and Instagram more secure and won’t make the necessary changes because they’ve put their huge profits ahead of the people. Action by Congress is needed. They cannot solve this crisis without your help. I believe that social media can enrich our lives and our society. We may have social networks that we like – those that reveal the best that is in humanity. The Internet has enabled people all over the world to receive and exchange information and ideas in ways that were previously unimaginable. And while the Internet can connect an increasingly globalized society without careful and responsible development, it can do as much harm as it can help.
