Ms. Harris will attend the Armistice Day ceremony with Mr. Macron on Thursday and will speak at the Paris Peace Forum as the highest-ranking US official she will attend. Mr Trump missed the inaugural event. On Friday, she will attend an international conference on Libya with several heads of state, including Mr Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
After two trips abroad – the first to Guatemala and Mexico, overshadowed by a mistaken answer to the question she answered about the US-Mexico border, and the next about Vietnam and Singapore, in the shadow of Afghanistan – Mrs. Harris’s visit to France has so far been determined by his personal success.
During a visit on Tuesday to the Pasteur Institute, a research center in Paris, where her mother, Shyamala Gopalan HarrisOnce employed, Ms. Harris said her visit was meant to symbolize “the current state of our relationship and our commitment to the future.” She traveled with two researchers, one French and one American, who are trying to determine why some people are fatally ill with coronavirus while others are not experiencing any symptoms.
She asked the couple about new options before reflecting in front of the cameras for a few minutes about her love of the scientific process – at least compared to the political bargaining process she witnessed at home.
“They start with a hypothesis,” said Ms. Harris. “And then they test it – always knowing that if you try something for the first time, there will be failures, there will be mistakes.
“While in government, we are campaigning using Plan — capital T, capital P — Plan,” she continued. “And then the environment is such that we have to defend the Plan, even when we first launch it, there may be some glitches and it’s time to reevaluate and then do it again.”
