Malayalam lyricist Bichu Thirumala passes away


Veteran Malayalam lyricist and poet B. Sivasankaran Nair, commonly known as Bichu Tirumala, passed away on Friday in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 80.

Bichu Tirumala was hospitalized Wednesday after a heart attack. He was on a ventilator. However, in the wee hours of Friday, he let out his last breath while still under medical care.

Bichu Tirumala entered the film industry as a lyricist in 1972’s Bhaja Govindam. And he never looked back. He has written over 3000 songs for films in Malayalam. Between the 1970s and 1990s, he collaborated with leading musicians including M.S.Vishwanathan, Elijaraj, G. Devarajan, V. Dakshinamurti, M.S.Baburaj, K. Raghavan, Uzeppachan and A. R Rahman and others. He also wrote many religious songs. He has won the prestigious Kerala State Awards twice in his career.

Many expressed condolences for the death of Bichu Tirumala, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

My sincere condolences. May the soul of Mukti find him, ”says a message of condolences posted on Twitter by Kerala Governor Sri Arif Mohammed Khan.

Bichu Tirumal is survived by his wife Prasanna and son Suman Bichu, the music director.
