Ronaldo scores but Man United beaten 2-1 at Young Boys

An early goal from Cristiano Ronaldo failed to save Manchester United from another 2-1 defeat in the Champions League in Switzerland on 14 September against the energetic and strong Young Boys.

US forward Jordan Sibatcheu, who came on as a substitute, struck in the fifth and last minute of stoppage time when the ball flew into space behind the squad’s defenders.

Ronaldo’s record 135th Champions League goal in the 13th minute was the first of his – and United’s – with just two shots in the game. He was replaced in 72.

It was created by a clever pass by Bruno Fernandez with the outside of his right foot into Ronaldo’s low kick path, which was twisted under goalkeeper David von Ballmos.

Reduced to 10 men 35 minutes after a red card foul by Aaron Wan-Bissaki, the Premier League co-leader struggled to create even more chances against the unknown Swiss champion.

United were already under constant pressure even before Wan-Bissaka challenged Christopher Martins in the middle of the Young Boys’ half.

The Young Boys leveled themselves right in 66th place when midfielder Nicholas Moomin Ngamaleu struck a low overhang on a goal-net that beat goalkeeper David de Gea on his near post.

It turned out to be another tough journey through Switzerland for United after two group stage losses to Basel over the past decade.

Ronaldo gained a stake in Champions League history simply by playing his first game for United in the tournament since the 2009 final. His 177th UEFA Champions League game held record holder Iker Casillas, his longtime Real Madrid teammate.

The UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds appear to have prepared the Young Boys well for the all-star United team, which have only played their fifth game of the season.

The Swiss side played their 13th game of the season, starting in mid-July with the first of six Champions League qualifiers.

Also on Tuesday in Group F, Villarreal hosted Atalanta at a later start.

On 29 September, United will host Villarreal, a rematch in last season’s Europa League final won by the Spanish club. On the same day, Atalanta receives Young Boys.
