Samsung announces LPDDR5X DRAM technology: All you need to know

Samsung announced its new leading-edge memory technology, the industry’s first 16-gigabit (GB) low-power, double data rate 5X (LPDDR5X) DRAM based on 14nm. LPDDR5X technology in new RAM technology will help “drive the continued growth of all high-speed data service applications, including 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and metaverse– says Samsung.

The brand’s LPDDR5X RAM is designed to improve speed, capacity and power savings for future 5G applications. The company claims that the new technology will provide “processing speed of more than 1.3 times and consumes almost 20% less power than the previous LPDDR5 solution.”

“In recent years, hyper-connected market segments such as AI, augmented reality (AR) and the metaverse, which rely on extremely fast large-scale data processing, have expanded rapidly,” said Sang Joon Hwan, senior vice president and head of DRAM. Samsung Electronics design team.

“Our LPDDR5X will expand the use of high-performance, low-power memory outside of smartphones and provide new opportunities for AI-based edge applications such as servers and even cars.”

The Samsung LPDDR5X DRAM claims to offer data processing speeds of up to 8.5 Gbps (Gbps), more than 1.3 times faster than the 6.4 Gbps LPDDR5. LPDDR5X DRAM will also consume about 20 percent less power than LPDDR5 memory.

Samsung also adds that the 16GB LPDDR5X chip will provide up to 64 gigabytes (GB) per memory package, meeting the growing demand for higher capacity mobile DRAM in devices.

Later this year, Samsung will partner with global chipset makers to “create a more viable foundation for the expanding world of digital reality, with LPDDR5X as a key part of that foundation,” the company said.
