Video streaming giant Netflix has announced that it will edit several scenes in Game of Squids showing the phone number after it was revealed that the number actually belongs to a real person who was bombarded with messages and phone calls from viewers.
“We are working with the production company (Siren Pictures) to address this issue, including editing scenes with a phone number where needed,” The Korea Times reported, citing the company.
The hit series used a real eight-digit phone number in several scenes in which people with limited money receive a calling card inviting them to a deadly survival game.
The owner of the phone number and several others with similar numbers have stated that their privacy has been breached since the series aired on September 17.
“Since the release of Squid Game, I’ve been bombarded with calls and text messages, and it’s impossible to live a normal life. Many people who watched the show called me day and night to say they wanted to join the game, and my phone battery runs out in less than half a day, ”the owner of the phone number told local media.
“The stress of the incessant pranks drives me crazy,” wrote another person, whose phone number differs from the number in the series by only one digit, and posted a screenshot of his phone conversations on social networks.
Netflix Korea asked viewers to refrain from calling and texting the number, but did not comment on progress in compensating the owner of the phone number when asked by The Korea Times over the phone.
“Squid Game” topped Netflix’s list of TV series in all 83 countries where the company provides over-the-top (OTT) services, the report said.
