Czechs beat Netherlands 2-0 to reach Euro 2020 quarterfinals

On Saturday, the Czechs will face Denmark in the quarterfinals in Baku, Azerbaijan.

When Oranje was shown in red, everything went on as usual.

So much so that someone other than Patrick Schick finally scored for the Czechs in the European Championship before the striker scored his fourth goal in the tournament.

These goals brought the Czech Republic a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands, which had to play with 10 players for most of the second half. It also gave the Czechs a place in the Euro 2020 quarterfinals.

The game-changer came 55 minutes into the game when Dutch center-back Matthijs de Ligt was sent off the field for handball under pressure from Schick. A red card was awarded based on the results of the video review.

In the 68th minute, after a free kick from the right, midfielder Tomas Holes brought the Czechs forward with a powerful header from close range. He dashed to the left of the penalty area and picked up the ball to set Shik on his 80s goal.

Schick scored both goals in the team’s first 2-0 win over Scotland, followed by a 1-1 draw with Croatia. Only Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more goals in Euro 2020 – five.

On Saturday, the Czechs will face Denmark in the quarterfinals in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Czechs made it into the last eight major tournaments for the first time since Euro 2012, when they lost to Portugal. Ronaldo scored the winning goal that day. They have not qualified for the last three World Championships and finished last in their group at Euro 2016.

On a warm evening at the Puskas Arena stadium in Budapest with a capacity of 67,215 people, the Dutch paid for not creating enough chances. Then the Czechs made them pay even more.

When Schick was practically lying on his back inside the penalty area, De Ligt slipped and took the ball with his right hand. Judge Sergei Karasev appointed a free kick and, after jogging to check his TV screen, removed De Ligt from the red card.

The incident came just seconds after the Dutch could take the lead when striker Donyell Malen walked clean. He failed to get around goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik because of the empty net.

When De Ligt was sent off, Netherlands coach Frank de Boer unexpectedly kicked Malen off the field, summing up the unsuccessful performance of the team that won all three group matches.

Memphis striker Depay and midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum have scored five goals together in these group matches, but they made little impact on Sunday as the Dutch failed to even hit a target against the Czechs.

The referee used another video review in the 60th minute to exclude the penalty for the ball with the hand of Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries.

Moments later, Dumfries blocked a shot from left-back Pavel Kaderabek. But the next chances of the Czechs could not be stopped.
