The new cases were discovered at a small poultry farm on June 24 in a village near the provincial capital of Bakuba, about 65 kilometers northeast of Baghdad, the official said.

Avian influenza cases have been identified at a poultry farm in Iraq’s eastern Diyala province, and measures have been taken to contain the spread of the disease, a health official said. The new cases were discovered at a small poultry farm June 24 in a village near the provincial capital of Bakuba, about 65 kilometers northeast of Baghdad, the head of the Diyala veterinary hospital, Mahmoud Farhan al-Shammari, told Xinhua on Saturday.

“We informed the governor of Diyala and took the necessary measures to combat the disease, including the culling of more than 4,000 chickens and the closure of the poultry farm for 90 days,” al-Shammari said. He added that the veterinary hospital’s quick response helped prevent transmission of infection to other areas.
