England striker Jadon Sancho completed his move to Manchester United by signing a five-year deal Friday with 13-time Premier League champions.
United paid Borussia Dortmund a € 85 million ($ 100 million) transfer fee for 21-year-old Sancho, the German club said.
The contract will keep Sancho at Old Trafford until June 2026 and includes the option of a sixth season.
The agreement was revealed when Sancho was on the international stage with England for the European Championships.
Sancho played four seasons for Dortmund after starting his career at Manchester City.
“I will always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play football for the first team, although I always knew that I would one day return to England,” he said in a statement to United. “The opportunity to join Manchester United is a dream come true and I just can’t wait to play in the Premier League.”
Sancho has scored 49 goals and 63 assists in all competitions for Dortmund, according to the Bundesliga club who wished him all the best.
“It was Jadon’s clear desire to return to his home country and the Premier League, and his behavior has always been absolutely impeccable,” said Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Wacke in a statement.
United finished second in the Premier League last season, 12 points behind rival Manchester City.
“This is a young and exciting team and I know that together we can evolve into something special to bring the success the fans deserve,” Sancho said.
United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Sancho “represents the type of player” he wants at Old Trafford.
“He is a striker in the best tradition of Manchester United. He will be an integral part of my team for years to come, and we look forward to his heyday, ”Solskjaer said. “His goals and passing records speak for themselves, and he will also bring tremendous pace, flair and creativity to the team.”
In 2017, Sancho turned down an offer to stay in the City and went to Dortmund instead.
Now he will play with another Manchester team that is seeking to overthrow its neighbor. United will kick off the new season on 14 August against Leeds.
