Switzerland beats world champions France on penalties to reach Euro 2020 quarters

Mbappe, France’s star of triumph at the 2018 World Cup, saved a penalty from goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Kilian Mbappe missed a decisive penalty when Switzerland stunned world champions France at Euro 2020 on Monday, winning 5-4 on penalties after their last 16 draw ended in a spectacular 3-3 draw.

Mbappe, France’s star of triumph at the 2018 World Cup, saved a penalty from goalkeeper Yann Sommer when Switzerland won a knockout for the first time at the European Championship and advanced to the round of 16 against Spain.

Haris Seferovic brought Switzerland ahead in regulation time, Karim Benzema’s double and Paul Pogba’s shot turned the tide, but another Seferovic goal and Mario Gavranovic’s attempt brought the match in Bucharest to extra time.
