Manchester, UK; Boston, USA; June 28, 2021: Less than a quarter of UK tech leaders find it easy to find quality tech candidates. According to a recent survey by Talent works, which surveyed 400 technology leaders in the UK and US to determine the status of hiring tech talent in both markets.
The study found that the US tech graduate market is richer in the US, and leaders are more likely to find it easier to hire tech talent (47%) than in the UK (23%). However, as both the UK (85%) and the US (90%) want to see more female talent in the industry, competition for a variety of tech talent is growing in both markets. Securing a strong next generation of talent has also been a key focus for UK technology leaders, with 87% wanting to see more tech talent emerge from universities.
Attitude versus experience
When asked what they are most likely to look for in candidates, perceptions in the UK differ greatly from that in the US, with a higher demand for experienced tech candidates in the US. UK technology CEOs are more likely to seek attitudes than education (45%) or experience in hiring, while their American counterparts are more likely to seek education (57%). Competition among experienced tech graduates is high in the United States, but 78% of these employers also prefer to hire those they know, giving preference to graduates who attended the same university or previously worked for the same company, which limits their horizons.
While technology leaders from both the UK and US believe talent has improved over the past five years (52% and 86%, respectively), 79% of US tech employers say they receive applications from candidates who lack essential communication and communication skills. interpersonal communication, compared with 64% of UK employers.
