Two CPI(M) leaders held in rape case in Kerala

Police said that in the area in northern Kerala, two leaders of the local KPI (M) were arrested on charges of raping a friend of the ruling Marxist party.

The accused, identified as P.P. Baburaj and T.P. Lijesh, were arrested on charges of rape, illegal possession of property and criminal intimidation of the applicant, who was a member of the committee of the KPI (M) branch in Wadakara, they said.

A certain Shrinivas of Kozhikode Rural JV told PTI that both were arrested in Karimbanapalam near the site early Monday morning.

However, local police said they did not know the political background of the two.

The victim, married and a mother of two, claimed that Baburaj broke into her home and raped her three months ago.

After that, he continued to sexually abuse her several times, each time blackmailing to reveal their relationship with her husband and others, according to her complaint, which also said that Lijesh also raped her, threatening her in the same way.

Tired of being harassed by the two, the victim went to the police and filed a complaint on Saturday.

Police sources added that the victim underwent a medical examination and a detailed statement was recorded by the police prior to the arrest of the two criminals.

According to media reports, although the party leaders tried to find a compromise in the case, the victim did not agree with the proposal and filed a complaint with the police.

Party sources said that after the arrest, the KPI (M) suspended the work of the two.

Baburaj was the secretary of the KPI (M) branch, and Lijesh was the regional secretary of the youth wing of the DYFI party.
