Vikrant Massey has established himself as a powerful performer who brings something new to every performance he performs. From Death in the Gunzha to Mirzapur, from Chhapak to Cargo, the 34-year-old has pushed boundaries every time he appears on screen.
In this interview with indianexpress.comVikrant talks about his next Mumbaikar with Santosh Sivan and his reactions to success and failure.
VikrantFilms don’t have to be hero-centered; rather, they become part of the world that history weaves. Of the choice of such films, he says that history is of paramount importance to him. “History is always important to me. I combine this with an opportunity that makes me challenge myself and talk about things that are generally relevant. I crave stories that have a good balance between entertainment and public representation, which empowers me to become a better actor. I feel like I need to tell stories that involve people, I want to interact with all of my stories while entertaining them at the same time. Any kind of art is a representation of what is happening in the real world, and films do that too. “
Massey will next be seen in Santosh Sivan’s Mumbaikar. “Santosh Sivan is an institution. Has been making films since the age of 30 – as a cinematographer, as a director. They have a very different style of work in the South, it’s so fast. It’s so fast that our 12-hour shift will be over in 8 hours. I learned so much about efficiency from him while working on Mumbaikar. He’s the most effective technician I’ve ever worked with. “
He also talked about working with Vijay Sethupati. “I feel great. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to spend too much time with him, we filmed together for only three nights. But during this time I saw how much hard work he puts into his work, his humility, it is very humiliating to see someone like that. After seeing so many successes, he still wants to do more every day. Working with him has been very inspiring and I strive very much for that, ”he says.
Regarding Mumbaikar, Vikrant says, “Observing these steadfast ministers has been such a learning experience for me. What I have learned from working on this film, I will definitely apply in my future work. “
Although Vikranta was filmed by some of the greatest filmmakers we have today, there were times when these films did not do as well as you might expect. Especially “Chhapaak” (2020), Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare (2020) and the recently released film “Hasin Dilruba”, where the main character of the film Taapsi Pannu criticized film critics.
“I don’t react,” Vikrant says. “Reaction is something, and feelings are something else. So I really feel a lot when a movie isn’t going well, whether it’s Chappak, Dolly Kitty, or Hasin Dillruba. I do not react because, from my point of view, no one is right or wrong, I belong to the world of storytelling and cinema, and there is no right or wrong here. There is no set template for things, and I am an optimist and outspoken libertarian, so my first task, even before expressing my opinion, is to understand the other person’s opinion and respect it, not avoid it. ”
Massey adds: “So everyone has their say, however we unfortunately live in a world where there are many peripheral influences to even say such a small thing as a movie. This debate will continue, the conversation will continue, people will have their points of view, and I will defend my point of view, and you will defend yours. We just have to be sure of one thing: we have to be honest about how we do it and never go below the belt. “
“And, frankly, because of the fact that I come from, and from the trials I went through, I do not live up to any expectations anyway. So even if it’s a good movie, I don’t expect anything, if it’s good, then great, if not, then it doesn’t matter. I try not to overcomplicate things because the minute I do it, it will affect my work and my peace of mind, ”concludes Vikrant.
Messi will next appear in “14 Phere” with Kriti Harbanda. It will air on the Zee5 from July 23rd.
His long-awaited action thriller “Mumbaikar” by Santosha Sivan is ready and will be released soon. This is a remake of the 2017 Tamil film Maanagaram starring Vikrant Massey, Vijay Sethupati, Tanya Maniktala, Hridhu Harun, Sanjay Mishra, Ranveer Shori and Sachin Hedekar.
