White hair causes and treatment: Expert shares insights

White hair can be a serious problem. When premature graying of hair sets in, it can lead to stress and anxiety in people. According to experts, the human body is made up of hair follicles that line skin cells. These follicles are made up of pigment cells known as melanin. These cells give color to the hair. But over time, these hair follicles can lose pigment, causing the hair to turn gray. Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Dr. Anup Dhir, Senior Consultant at Apollo Hospital and former President of the Indian Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said: “Any deficiency of Vitamin B-6, B-12, Biotin, Vitamin D or Vitamin E can lead to premature graying. A 2016 study published in the International Journal of Trichology looked at factors associated with premature graying in trusted young Indians under the age of 25. Serum ferritin, which stores iron in the body, vitamin B-12, and good HDL-C cholesterol were low in people with premature graying of hair.”

He went on to note the causes of graying hair and possible treatment available options. Let’s take a look:

The reasons:

GeneticsA: Sometimes genetics play a role in the possibility of gray hair and how it can affect it.

Race and ethnicity: Dr. Anup Dhir said, “According to the same 2013 study, premature graying in white people can start as early as 20 years old, while in Asians it can start as early as 25 years old, and in African Americans as early as 30 years old.”

oxidative stress: The doctor pointed out that in addition to genetics and race, oxidative stress can play a huge role in premature graying of hair.

medical conditions: Some diseases, such as thyroid dysfunction and autoimmune diseases, can increase the risk of early graying.

Care:

Dietary changes: Premature graying can in some cases be reversed with appropriate diagnosis and treatment. A well-balanced diet and regular hair care can also help. Foods rich in antioxidants, including fresh fruits and vegetables, green tea, olive oil, fish, etc., should be included in the diet. Curry leaves, bhringraj and amla can also help. Regular use of combed gourd oil can help prevent graying of hair.

Lifestyle changes: A doctor has recommended that cutting down or stopping smoking and consuming more antioxidants can help reduce oxidative stress. It can additionally help in slowing down or reducing graying of the hair.
